People say Warrior/Elementalists suck? I always thought they'd be pretty good =(
Or is it just ele/war?
Sorry for the fairly dumb question =(
Thanks!

Ele/War kind of sucks, not War/Ele. The reason is because Ele's typically die very easily and since War's are typically in the middle of battle with 9/10ths of their skills it is quite useless. That said there are a couple of great stances and skills that can benefit any class as a warrior. (Balanced Stance, Sprint, etc..)

I advise you to stay away from being a ranger or a mesmer. I'm not flaming these classes, I'm just saying that.. well the reputation they've recieved after so many BAD players playing them and them being completely useless gives them a bad name. And for this reason, finding a party can be a NIGHTMARE with those classes. Not to mention soloing will be very difficult as well.

All classes are pretty easy to play except for those. Monk, run around, heal, etc. Warrior, get in first, hit stuff, use your adreneline skills, let your monk heal you. Necro, do your damage, raise minions if you want. Ele, DO YOUR DAMAGE because you can do so much.

this game is too well balanced for there to be a overall "best" build, like that one person said there are bests for certain things but no overall best.

Since most people come from other mmorpg's, why dont you just give us an idea of the type of character you want to develop. I'm sure there is enough knowledge here to give you some good ideas.

But asking for the Best profession is gonna get you nowhere. If your the type of person that plays the most powerful character in every game you come across, you are probably going to have problems in this game, there is no best... there is balance.

Hmm, i'm looking for more of the hybrid profession, or jack-of-all-trades.
I think in the descriptions it said the ranger is the most similar to this? Then i read that ranger/mesmer has a lot of DoTs, and i think that would be pretty nice. However, then someone said a lot of people play that combination, i usually like to be the rare profession =P

Well, Ranger/Mesmer is a powerful character, but its not overused like some other combos like w/mo or e/mo, they are more concentrated on keeping the enemy monk/casters from doing damage, instead of doing straight damage. Using DoT's as your main source of damage can be nice under the right conditions, its just not reliable enough with all the counters for them. Hard for me to recommend this class to a beginner, not an easy one to play.

Jack-of-all-trades doesn't give me much to work with, seeing that the game is based on merging 2 classes into 1. Do you like rogue types? mage types? warrior types?

Well, if the Ranger/Mesmer is a hard character to play, does that mean it's really strong if played well?
In WoW, the druid is fairly shabby if played wrong, but it's amazing if played well and right... Would this be the same case with the Ranger/Mesmer?
I'd say if there is no real jack-of-all-trades, i'd probably either go with a battle mage like character or a ranger (this is assuming they can do at least decent melee, not tanking, but they can hold their own for awhile) with mesmer.
Also, i'm mainly looking for a harder character to play, playing something hard and being successful isn't as rewarding as being successful after overcoming a challenge =D

Atm i'm r/e, but i ignore the ele part and i'm full ranger. People criticise ranger because of its lacking dmg and a... well, in pvp rangers can die fast if they don't play it right.

With rangers, you've got to forget about dmg and use bleeding and poison to your advantage. That helps the team, aswell as using distracting and disabling shots on a monk really helps when disposing of them fast.

Overall if you want to be a team player and not selfish. I would go w/mo.

If you want to help, be a n/e or e/e or r/? aswell as many others.

From my experience this list is from most interesting/challenging to boring:
Monk
Mesmer
Necro
Warrior
Elementalist
Ranger

Needless to say I don't use my Ranger/Elementalist class much since it's so boring :/

I enjoy the heck out of my Fire E/Me combo... Combing the high dmg of fire based spells with the Mesmer hexes works out really well...

The only problem with my build is that i have virtually no healing and/or defense... This is usually ok in that I can completely kill most mobs before they even get to me. (I'll start off with Immolation and that mesmer hex that drains health, then Phoenix, then Meteor Shower, then (that fire storm spell) by that time they are either dead or very close... if they get to me, I will also throw down a lava mound or 2.

The dmg rocks, but... i have to make sure that I either have the healer henchman as one of my henchmen, or I have to make sure I am partied with a monk... The fact is that as a dmg dealer I take alot of agro, and I am toast if I cannot get a heal.

Didn't mean there are no Jack of all trades, I meant every class is a jack of all trades in a sense.

Sounds like ranger interests you, maybe try a Ranger/Monk, Bow + Judges Insight = pain. Judges Insight makes your weapon do holy damage and have 20% penetration.... hmm something just dawned on me, holy damage ignores armor, so why the armor penetration lol.

To the poster above, ya I know what you mean. All my chars have Monk in them except for my E/W and I feel so naked without heals... although having 115 armor against physical and 140 armor against elements helps.

To me a ranger is least boring. Playing a ranger after completing all second profession change quests is even more fun, as you can now trying being a beast master or trapper, or switch to R/W for a taste of melee, or to R/E for magic. And for lack of skill points? Find a nice spot with lvl 20+ monsters to solo with your pet and you can level up and gaining skill points really fast. Unlike all other primary professions most of which come with limitation (weak armor, no energy etc.), Ranger/X is all round and fun for all kinds of build, so you can experiment to your heart's content.

here is alittle bit of info on som combos that might help you on you.

I see some people posting Warrior/Elem
Pros: Warior armor is much better
Cons: Lack of energy pool to cast the elementalist skills you need when tanking

Either way with this combination your going to find lots of problems with it.

Now if your into tanking style i would sugest to either sub the second proffesion with either Monk or Mesmer.

with Monk you can heal with Healing Breeze or Mending and not use alot of points to do so.. Mending being the better of the 2. becasue its a enchantment that and you will not need to spam heal yourself with this.

With Meshmer you can deep wound someone/bleed and then stack that with a life drain "dont remember the name of the skill on the mesmer" but this combo is one hell of a nice stack

Hmm, i'll probably just go with Ranger/Mesmer. Looks like it should be pretty fun =)
Besides, i can always make more characters =D (I'll bring this one to a decent level first)
Thanks for the help!

my chars.
name: Class: Lvl: Info:
Shridia Wolv R/E 20, just a ranger, currently muckin round with either, poison ranger or a conjure frost ranger. ^^
Shridia Swordsong W/? 6, just a warrio atm, prob end up been a w/me, still pre-searing, just started questing ^^
Shridia Perfidious Mo/N 5, going to make a all out healer, gonna be fun ^^

so far i find the warrior the mosting boring, whilst the R/E is fun to play, as the Mo/N is, but the Mo/N you have to pay more attention when playing her, all my char's are female.

in most rpg's i go either a rogue like char or a bow person, so since no rogue, i went bow.... i also like raising dead an that, but since that seems a bit lacking in GW im gonna go all out healing.
